About the Slow Food Movement

Slow Food was established in Italy in 1986 as a direct result of McDonalds opening an outlet in Rome. Italians were incensed; fast food was the antithesis of their cuisine. Slow Food was created to promote food culture and to defend locally produced foods and agriculture biodiversity worldwide. It opposes the standardization of taste, defends the need for consumer information, protects cultural identities tied to food and gastronomic traditions, safeguards foods and cultivation and processing techniques inherited from tradition, and defends domestic and wild animal and vegetable species.

Today, over 100,000 people all over the world support the Slow Food movement through Convivia, or groups which hold events in their communities to raise awareness about food issues.
